Feel Dead Brains
Posted by: Milena Krstic
 Thursday, March 12th 2009

The Cognitive Science Students Association is pleased to be hosting the popular event, Feel Dead Brains! It will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 7:00pm - 10:00pm in 5101 Tolman Hall.

There will be a neuroanatomy talk by Bradley Voytek, an expert on the things that can go wrong during development and later life, and he is excited to come and share his knowledge with us. Then, the talk is followed by a chance for all of you to come up close and personal with the grey matter in everyone's heads. The brain is the most complex structure known anywhere, and to be able to study it closer is a real treat. So come, join the CSSA in this one-of-a-kind event!

Hope to see you all there!

2009 California Cognitive Science Conference
Posted by: Jason Martin
 Monday, March 9th 2009

The Cognitive Science Student Association at UC Berkeley is pleased to be
hosting the first annual California Cognitive Science Conference this year
on Saturday, April 25 from 8:30am to 4pm, being held at the Faculty Club
on the Cal campus.

This conference will be a great experience for all students and faculty
interested in all aspects of cognitive science to both share research and
engage in discussion about the future of the field from where it is today.
The theme for the 2009 CCSC is Tricks of the Mind – an exploration of the
intricacies and mysteries of our conscious and unconscious experiences of
the world. Our keynote speakers will be Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm
Computing, Handspring, Numenta, and the Redwood Institute of Neuroscience,
as well as author of “On Intelligence”, and John Searle, Slusser Professor
of Philosophy at UC Berkeley, winner of the Jean Nicod Prize and the
National Humanities Medal, widely recognized as one of the pioneers of
Cognitive Science.

Our overarching goal in holding this conference is to recognize the
achievements that California undergraduates have made in their fields of
research. All undergraduates who have participated or are currently
participating in research related to Cognitive Science, Psychology,
Neuroscience, Computational Modeling, Linguistics, Philosophy, Social
Anthropology, or any study of the mind are highly encouraged to submit
an abstract to http://cssa.berkeley.edu/ccsc/call-for-papers/ as an
application to present their research at the California Cognitive Science
Conference.

All information about the conference, as well as a form to register to
attend the conference, can be found on our website at
http://cssa.berkeley.edu/ccsc/. We look forward to seeing everyone in
April!

importantly, take a load off before studying for the first round of midterms.

This event will take place at La Val's on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30pm. Make sure to check out our new CSSA t-shirts while you're there!

What is Cognitive Science?
Cognitive Science is an emerging interdisciplinary field that brings together portions of Psychology, Computer Science (AI), Neuroscience, Linguistics, Education and many others. Essentially, its goal lies in understanding the brain, how it works, and how we might make better make use of it. For a more in-depth description, visit the UCB Cognitive Science web site.

What is the CSSA?
We are a tight-knit group of students interested in the current issues of Cognitive Science. Our meetings take place on the first and third Wednesday of every month. Meetings are typically an open discussion forum with focus on a particular topic of interest. Anyone is welcome to attend and participate - if nothing else, it's a great way to meet new friends.

How do I become involved?
To start, add yourself to our main mailing list now by entering your e-mail address above, or click here for additional options and instructions. Once on the list, you'll receive a message containing the topic to be discussed at the next meeting as well as any pertinent news. Then simply show up! We always welcome new members!

Also, visit our forum to discuss Cog Sci news, UCB Cog Sci classes and professors, or just to chat with fellow Cog Sci geeks!
