Computer Science Independent Study
Professor:
Recommender: Madhu Prabaker
Come up with a specific area in CS you would like to explore. This is a good opportunity to work with the BISC program.
BISC is the Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing. They have several projects that you can help further. A really good
opportunity to do something different and exciting. Hey whatever works for you man, you can do it.

CS 298 - HCI Seminar
Professor: John Canny (S03)
Recommender: Bryan Kennedy
Must For: Anyone interested in HCI
Prof Canny brought us some very interesting speakers on a variety of cool HCI projects - such as a team from the Asian division of the modern-day PARC working on software that extends your information cloud (the software, documents, etc that you take with you everywhere). You really get a sense of where HCI is heading, and how you can be a part of it. Plus, the class can fulfill that extra unit of upper division for you MCB-64 + NS emphasizers out there.

IB245/L - Functional Neuroanatomy
Professor: Dr. Miriam Diamond (SP05)
Recommender: Katharine Clark
Must For: People who love Brains!
When I touched a brain our first lab, I knew I was in love. While it IS so much INFORMATION (wow), it's amazing, informative, exciting and fascinating. Professor Diamond has been involved with so many of the important discoveries about the brain and she is always willing to answer questions. Her passion, as well as that of the GSIs, for everything Neuroanatomy, makes this a challenging and worthwhile course.

MCB 165 - Molecular Neurobiology
Professor: (S03)
Recommender: Bryan Kennedy
Must For: Anyone who is considering taking MCB 64
Okay, you look at the accepted class list for your NS emphasis, noting that you can take MCB 64 for your fulfillment. Be aware, however, that MCB 64 should really be an upper division - the only reason it's not is for the Psych slackies that need to take it for their LD bio requirement. But the content of the class is definately UD in nature.

By contrast, MCB 165 is taught by arguably the best professor on campus, David Presti. It makes a nice transition from MCB 61, which you already took.

MCB 165 - Molecular Neurobiology
Professor: Dr. David Presti (SP05)
Recommender: Katharine Clark
Must For: Neurotransmitten Cog Sci Majors!
If you liked MCB 61, you'll love MCB 165. Presti is fun and engaging making some of the more comlex concepts easy to understand. I particularly like that the reader is composed almost entirely of acutal published scientific papers, ensuring that the information hasn't been diluted or interpreted. Learning to read and use actual knowledge from the source, is good practice for anyone interested in science. It's also especially helpful for the cool research paper we write for the class.

PSYCH 107 - Buddhist Psychology
Professor: (F03)
Recommender: Bryan Kennedy
Must For: Anyone interested in exploring other theories of the mind
Do not walk into Psych 107 expecting it to be an easy class. There is a heck of a lot of reading to do, and none of it is very easy nor straightforward. Lectures lack structure, and most of the terms you'll be needing to know are very foreign, making them more difficult to remember.

That aside, it was an interesting class, that explores the mind from a different perspective than you're used to. I highly recommend this class in addition to the meditation Decal - they complement eachother well.

PSYCH 117 - Cognitive Neuroscience
Professor: D'Esposito (S04)
Recommender: Bryan Kennedy
Must For: Anyone who doesn't mind a little brain malfunction
Not the easiest class you'll ever take, but hands down the most interesting and rewarding. Learn what's wrong with you and your friends.

Psych 129 - Psychology of Consciousness
Professor: Kihlstrom (SP03)
Recommender: Bryan Kennedy

Psych 129 -- Scientific approaches to consciousness
Professor: (SP04)
Recommender: Tim Mullen
Must For: anyone who is interested in consciousness
Awesome class! Lots of interesting reading. Khilstrom is a great lecturer. Expect extensive converage of explicit/implicit memory distinctions, hypnosis, and sleep studies. Work is not at all overwhelming (esp. since the reading is so interesting), and the exams are quite fair.
